I work better, I’ve found, when I have multiple deadlines looming over my head—even if they are self-imposed deadlines. So, I know I said back in October I was back in the blogging game, but then I fell off the edge of the planet again. Go figure. I blame my BFF Sara for that, although she doesn’t know it (then again, maybe she does, she is scary perceptive like a ninja). Sara is in her third trimester and I have gone crafting crazy trying to get my BIG plans completed before Baby arrives! So October passed in a blur of yarn and fabric and emergency poodle skirts. And I’m still not done!
So what does that mean for me? Well, November is going to be busy. As always. I don’t even try to pretend to be surprised. In addition to the crafting and NaNoWriMo, I am going to commit to getting at least two posts a week. They might be short, maybe just be a photo or two. But the more I have to accomplish, the more willing I am to manage my time appropriately and not procrastinate.
And Friends, I am a big procrastinator. If I started a list of all my faults, procrastination would be at the top. I totally blame my family for that one. As the baby of the family, I learned very early on that if I waited long enough, someone else would do my task for me. Heck! My mom and sister still do it! Remember that whole painting my house thing?
(Another fault, since I’m listing them, apparently I don’t like to take responsibility for myself. But I blame my birth order for that.)
But no one is going to craft for me. And no one is going to NaNo for me. And clearly, no one is blogging for me. So I’ve got to pick up the slack. And by pick up the slack, I really mean, actually do the stuff that I want to do: crafting, blogging, writing.
Of course, there is one teensy flaw in my plan. Work. Yup. Me working, as much as I love my job (and a post is coming out soon about that) it really is putting a kink in my whole time management plan. Although to be fair, there are a few things I can do while I am at work that doesn’t interfere with actually working especially during the slow period, but don’t tell anyone I said so!

I Made It Monday
So crafty hasn't really been on radar lately. I've been...lazy. Yup. Just plain lazy. That isn't an excuse or maybe it is. Maybe the current financial issues that I've been going through have finally broken my creative side. Maybe I've been just a bit too obsessed with Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess (it's an old game, but new to me!). Maybe it's because the cold snap that settled on us over the last few weeks has done a number on my hands (what does that mean anyway? "Done a number?" Tap danced? Belted out a song?) and now they are cracked and crusty with dry skin that no amount of moisturizing can fix.
Whatever the reasons, I proudly present a Christmas project that I made for the girls. I didn't take photos of the process which is unlike me but I didn't want the girls to accidentally find them on the camera or on the computer since it was a surprise. We've always used store bought Advent calendars in the past so when I saw this for sale at Hobby Lobby, I knew I had to give it a try.
Remember all that glue I spilled over my dining room table because I was mod podging? Well I was working on this along with some other projects. Actually, this is the second Advent calendar I made. The first one I nearly completed but with the Florida humidity it was still a bit tacky when Scott put some other things on top of it as he rearranged stuff in our closet. The resulting gluey mess was not pretty but I was actually okay with the wanton destruction as it allowed me to learn from the first one and make the second one better.
I filled it with some chocolates and charms for a holiday themed charm bracelet that we assembled as the month went on. The girls had fun rushing for it every morning; of course, they said I needed to make another one so that they can each have their own for "later on."

I Made It Monday
I've been kind of slow on the crafting lately. Coming off of the holiday crafting high always leads me to a slow down in January and February. I've been feeling the yearning for some learning. I like knowing how to do things and I'm all about learning a new craft. There's about a half dozen crafts I would love to learn: spinning...okay spinning it the only one I can think of right now, but I swear there are more! I'm a bit bored with what I have right now and that makes it hard to want to sit down with a skein of yarn or a half dozen photographs and be creative.
Plus, as I've mentioned before I haven't been all that...enthusiastic...with life right now. A lot is going on and often I find myself sitting with a project in my lap or on the table in front of me and no desire whatsoever to do any work on the project. I'll stare at the TV not seeing what I'm watching, worrying instead of working. It happens and I hate it when I catch myself zoning out. I end up putting the project aside and doing chores or more often than not, wasting time on Pinterest (I don't have an account and refuse to get one, but jeesh do I love scrolling through). Hopefully one of the biggest issues going on right now will soon be resolved and I'll get back into my normal routine.
I actually started working on today's project way back before Christmas but only finished it late last week. It should have taken a day or two tops. I worked on it for an hour, lost interest, went back a week later and couldn't remember what row I was on so I tore the whole thing out and restarted.
This happened a whole slew of times.
I got the pattern from one of my favorite crocheters, Ana Paula. Her book Amigurumi Toy Box features a quartet of cute sea creatures that make me squee. The jellyfish, though, is by far my favorite.

Friday Photos
Alright so these are older photos from December, but I figured that since Blogger and I were taking a break and all, I'd go pull some funny shots I would have shared if I could have.
Every year I buy a gingerbread house kit from Wilton. I know I might lose some of my baking cred here, but I really don't like gingerbread all that much and for me rolling out dough is a pain. The kits are relatively cheap, offer an afternoon of shenanigans (and yes, it always ends with shenanigans!), and the end result is apretty "creative" center piece during the lead up to Christmas.
This year I got the mini village kit with four tiny houses and another kit to make trees. What started out are a serious endevour quickly degenerated into a nonpareil food fight with Ashleigh and I slinging sprinkles across the table at each other. Cyra was definitely not amused. In fact, she was so serious and determined to make her two houses perfect that she didn't even throw one sprinkle! And she yelled at us to "stop acting like children."
Jeesh. Ten year olds are so bossy.
This was our finished project. I used two lemon Starbursts and molded them into stars for the tops of my trees. Ashleigh and I got crazy with the decorating and ended up making a mess.
Now the problem with leaving out an edible decoration, we've discovered, is that our dog Junie likes to counter surf. Nothing is safe. And though she has gotton much better about behaving now that I watch her like a hawk all day and keep the counters and tables free from temptation, I knew that a tray laden with sweet cookies and icing would be her downfall. In order to keep our village safe, each night I would slip it into the oven.
Surely nothing could go wrong with that plan.
Nothing that is until a few days before Christmas when I forgot to take it out and preheated the oven for dinner...
A delicious sweet smell wafted out from the over as I was chopping up a pepper. And all of a sudden it dawned on me: The Village!
Pulling it out of the oven I couldn't help but laugh. Cyra came running out to see what was so funn an nearly burst into tears.
"It's okay," I told her. "Look, only the icing roads and my stars seem to be melty. It'll be fine."
Unless, of course, you're the dingbat who pops it back into the oven that night and promptly forgets about it until Christmas morning, when once again, the oven required some preheating. This time, however, distracted by the chaos of the morning, I didn't remember until I was about to put in the blueberry stuffed French toast.
"Cyra," I cried out, "I did it again!"
"MOMMY!" she hollered from the living room as she rushed into the kitchen shiny new presents temporarily forgotten. Her shoulders sagged a little in defeat and my mom stifled a giggle. I couldn't help it. I burst into laughter. Cyra glared at me for a second before running back into the living. She returned a few seconds later camera in hand.
"Here," she sighed. "You might as well take pictures of it."
The lesson? Always check inside your oven before you preheat it. Or maybe just don't store things in your oven in the first place.

I Made It Monday
So last year I made a valiant attempt at chronicling our
year in a scrap book. My goal was to go from December 21, 2011 to December 22,
2012. I called it Waiting for the Apocalypse. I got to about March before I stopped. The problem was I take
so many pictures that I ended up with an overwhelming amount to go through. I
got frustrated and, not a big surprise, distracted by other things that were
slightly more pressing than scrapbooking.
But I still liked and clung to the idea of scrapbooking life
as it happened. And it was in the course of looking for new scrapbooking
resources that I stumbled across a few blogs that were talking about something
called Project Life. I traced the links back to a woman, Becky Higgins, who had
hatched and sold a scrapbooking system that cut out time consuming layout
dilemmas and matching papers.
Project Life is a streamlined system. Something I can take
out and spend an hour or two with and put away. I liked that.
I did not, however, like the price tag associated with all
the accessories. I’ve got accessories out the wazoo! Paper, stickers, vellum
quotes and sayings, albums…and did I mention the paper? I’ve got a lot of
scrapbook paper. I’ve got enough scrapbook paper that I’m probably going to
have to include it in my will.
The one thing I didn’t have was the nifty photo pages (photo
page protectors…what are those things called anyway?).
So I ordered some (FYI - Becky sells her supplies through Amazon). Just a small pack to see how it would go.
While I was waiting from my package to arrive I spent my evenings going through
my shoebox full of scraps cutting them down to sizes that would fit the photo
pages. I spent hours combing through the photos I’d taken trying to narrow the
ones I loved down to a reasonable 5-8. Five to eight photos to capture the week.
Reasonable and doable.
Once the pages arrived, I established a routine. Oh how I
hate routines (more on that later)! But I knew that if I didn’t establish a day
to scrapbook, it would just collect dust like the Camping book, the Apocalypse
book and the Birthday Fiesta O’ Fun books. Mondays, I decided would be the day.
Mondays I go into town and run my errands. I do the grocery shopping, I pick up
the miscellaneous things I need from Home Depot or Target. Mondays I would
print my photos and Mondays I would scrapbook.
And, my friends, I do. I am. It isn’t overly elaborate or
crazy with crafty and creativity but I’m getting what I wanted to accomplish
done. And that, my friends, makes me happy. And slightly proud because really
right now, I need to show that I can start a project and finish it.

Photo A Day - Color
It's no secret that I have an amazing collection of craft supplies. I show them off proudly at the mere mention of craftiness. So of course it should come as no surprise that when the subject of the Photo A Day is color I would turn to my craftway. I haven't started on the projects that require painting yet, but when I do I know my paints will be ready!
So they are arranged by color. That isn't OCD. It's practical. Now if I had them arranged by color in alphabetical order...then we might have a problem.
I think I need to find a larger bin...the paints seem to be multiplying!

Tis the Season
November is pressing down upon me and as my busiest month of
the year I am not exactly looking forward to it in the traditional sense.
Actually, I’m kinda freaked out about the whole thing.
November brings NaNoWriMo, a writing challenge that I have
participated in since 2004. In past years I’ve run the gamut of writing:
planning, note cards, winging it, basic ideas, just a character. I’ve done it
all. This year is the first year I haven’t had a direction before October hit. In
fact, I just got my ideas together and drafted a nearly naked plot with a
few hazy characters. The years I’ve planned I’ve done better but I’m hopeful
that I’ll continue my winning streak.
November also brings a last ditch frenzied approach to
finishing craft projects for Christmas. As usual I have set myself very high
craft goals and then there was the incident earlier this month that
accidentally ruined three projects that were near completion. So I’m restarting
three projects, continuing two more and trying to find the time for a good half
dozen not even started yet.
November is also Cyra’s birthday month. In previous years we've
gone camping, thrown small parties, had a simple dinner. This year? It’s
bowling. We haven’t established if it will be a bowling party or just us
bowling for fun. Either way it will be fun. She’s a whole decade old this year.
It seems hard to believe. I cleaned out my closet last week and pulled out the
girls’ baby boxes. I love how amazing they are, what wonderful people they are
turning out to be but, still, I miss them as babies.
If I have a second favorite holiday, it is the completely
made-up Thanksgiving feast. I love to cook and bake and it's like Thanksgiving was created just to enable my cooking obsession. Thanksgiving is often
treated as a week long event in my house. I bake far too many desserts, way too
many side dishes and a turkey three times larger than we actually have need
for. I think the largest group of people I’ve fed in recent years was maybe
ten. Typically there are six or seven.
But that doesn’t stop me from cooking as though I was feeding
twenty-seven! This year might be slightly different as we certainly don’t have
the budget for a proper feast.
Knowing myself as I do, I doubt that I will be writing much
for the blog and that distresses me. I have let myself get out of the good
habits of regular blogging and commenting and so of course I want to rededicate
myself to daily postings. With all my focus on NaNo and crafting, I think I
will once again participate in fatmumslim’s Photo-A-Day for November.
Tis the season alright! Season of crazy. Season of fun. Season
of self-induced stress. I work best under pressure and deadlines. If I don’t
have one or the other I tend to be lazy and self-indulgent.

I (un)Made It Monday
Remember that beautiful crochet project I was working on a while ago? The orangey sunset one?
The one where I knew, just absolutely knew that I would need more yarn to complete? Guess which one I can no longer work on because the store where I bought the yarn discontinued carrying it?
So very frustrating, my friends, to be in the middle of a project and not have enough yarn to finish it. Oh, I'm sure I could order it online somewhere...but that's not the point.
Because, I'm impulsive, see. And my level of spontaneity correlates directly with my level of frustration. So I end up with something like this before I even realize it.
There is a new project in the works for this yarn, but as it is a gift, like many of my other projects at this time, and thus cannot yet be revealed.
On a side note, guess whose family is already getting sick of my impromptu bursts of Christmas music? And the stack of Christmas movies sitting by the DVD player? They just don't understand that when I'm in a gifty making mood, I need a gifty making environment to encourage my creativity!

I Made It Monday
I've decided that I will take a break from my "I Made It Monday" series. I find that the summer is not a time I am very focused on crafting and while I have a few projects I am working on right now, they are intended as gifts and as such, I will not post them here until after they have been, you know, gifted. "I Made It Monday" will return in late August or early September.
I am thinking however on doing a Strange Florida Saturday...so many day trips to so many odd places in this creepy state!
I don't want to leave you without any photos though, so here is one of a scarlet ibis I took at the zoo. Scarlet ibises freak me right the heck out because 1) look at that eye! Can you not hear the ibis' thoughts? "Just one little step closer and I can jam my beak straight through her eye! 2) They are far too flashy. Kind of egotistical if you ask me (and as a Leo I totally know all about being egotistical). 3) I once got into a near shouting match with my 9th grade English teacher because of the short story "The Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst. I held the older brother accountable for killing Doodle and the teacher disagreed. Really?

I Made It Monday
What happens when I combine my love of gaming, my craftiness and too many sets of dice? You get a new dice box! I made this a few years ago but as you can see it's getting crowded again. On a side note, I really need to stop buying dice.
The top and front designs are just doodles I did in silver, gold and black acrylic paint.
I painted a light brown on first and then streaked a darker brown through the still wet paint to achieve a wood plank look.
I wanted to line it with crushed red velvet...but all I had was red felt.
So many dice. I think I need a bigger box...and of course more dice would be needed so the box wouldn't feel empty. It is a vicious cycle. More dice, bigger box, more dice...pretty, pretty dice!

I Made It Monday
For this week's project, I was inspired by Carly over at A Sewcial Life. One of the few crafty bloggers I follow, her crafts are very folk artsy and whimsical. Recently, she posted about a summer scarf she made with this fantastic fabric she bought in India. I love scarfs but as a winter necessity. I had never considered them to be summer accessory.
In any case, in an attempt to utilize my excessive stash of yarn, I decided to make a summer scarf out of a light weight 100% mercerized cotton. I choose an open weave/mesh pattern called "honeycomb." It was a relatively quick project and I probably spent about two hours on it over the course of a few days.

I (almost) Made It Monday
Part of being a Leo is my insane tendency to start projects, become bored and/or run out of material and/or come up with a fantastic NEW project idea and abandon the old one (trust me it is way easier to blame this on fanciful astrological powers - even though I sort of think, occasionally, it's accurate). That often leaves me a half dozen or so projects laying around in various states of completion.
Today I share with you a few of those projects. All of these are crochet projects...I didn't even think to include unfinished scrapbook projects or whatnot because I'm fairly certain that that many photos would crash my blogger account!
Some were abandoned as hopeless. Some set aside in want of more material. Some I set aside as better ideas came to me. Some...I just got plain bored with.

For a while I was big into motifs. These babies are quick and easy to make and once I know the pattern it is almost mindless.
These had a strong urge to be a scarf but I couldn't decide on how I wanted to connect them, so in a container they go. The pattern here is a granny square.
These are blocks for a blanket but I ran out of yarn and since I didn't have the budget to buy more at the time I moved on to something else.
I really love this pattern. It's almost like a granny square but totally not!
Another blanket. Another project stalled for want of yarn.
The pattern is a simple ripple stitch. I was going to do a sunburst pattern, but it looked odd with the variegated yarn.
My crochet bag. And the newest project I started - a friendship bracelet for Cyra.

K is for Kentucky Derby
I imagine that a lot of people will write about the Kentucky Derby, if not today then soon, since it is almost here. I never paid much attention to the Derby growing up. It wasn’t until I met Sara, actually, that I began to have more than just a passing interest in the race.
For a few years before Sara went to Japan and our gaming group broke up we gamed every Saturday night. Often times we (Sara and I) turned the gaming session into a celebration. We both enjoy cooking and baking and our weekly gaming sessions gave us the perfect opportunity to cook and bake and not end up with piles of leftovers. When special occasions coincided with our Saturday night game more often than not, we invited the gamers over early to participate in whatever festivities we came up with.
Since Derby Day falls on the first Saturday of May Sara and I started talking about hosting a Kentucky Derby party. Sara planned a menu of Kentucky Hot Browns, Corn Pudding, A Run for the Roses Pie and of course Mint Juleps.
But what would a Derby Party be without fancy hats? I bought a bunch of straw hats from Michaels and the cheap silk flowers. Along with the multitude of ribbons I already had, we had the beginnings of a great project. We spent the afternoon hot-gluing flowers and butterflies, ribbons and buttons to our hats.
We all picked our favorite horse and placed our “bets.” The winner would walk away with a pretty gift bag full of old-fashioned hard candy: lemon drops, rock candy, and root beer barrels and taffy. And if no one won then the loot could be shared.
That year started a tradition that I kept even when Sara was in Japan. We’d wear our hats, paint wooden horses from Michaels (I added that in the next year when we needed another craft), we’d watch the pre-race activities and make a delicious dinner.
The girls look forward to the Kentucky Derby now each year. Sure we don’t follow horse racing. Sure we pick our favorites based on their names and what they look like. But we don’t let particulars bother us.

March Photo A Day - Your Name
When I married Scott, I kept my maiden name. There's nothing wrong with Scott's name except that it isn't my name. I was adamant that the only thing that was truly mine, that belonged to no one else in the world, was my name. No one could take it from me. It was my unique identification.
I have not changed my opinion on that. I still firmly believe that my name is mine alone. Although both girls have my husband's last name, I have passed my belief onto to my them unwittingly. When they speak of their futures and their potential husbands and children (I cringe every time they do this) they use their last name for their children. Maybe it's a result of not knowing who their husbands will be. Maybe it is a result of my opinion. Regardless of the reason, they are equally adamant that their name will remain their own.
Over the years, I have learned that it isn't just my birth name that is mine, I actually own quite a number of names all of which I am proud to have. The one that gives me the greatest pleasure though is Mommy.
For today's theme, I decided to get a bit creative with my many names and create my own word cloud. If you haven't ever seen one (where have you been?) you can find them here or here. I didn't want to have a computer create mine for me especially when I have so many craft supplies, so I made my by hand.
This shot is a raw one. I had just finished it and set it on my black ottoman.
This one is the same as the color one above but while I was playing around with my edit buttons (I don't have photoshop so I just use the MS Windows photo tools) and I really loved the extreme contrast in the b&w.

This one I put it in a goldenrod painted frame that I had planned for another project. I doubt very much I'll keep it in this. I think it needs a less yellow frame.

Keeping Busy
We had a “Doing Stuff” Saturday this past weekend. Ashleigh worked with my mom to make this:
I'm so proud of her...Even better? She's proud of herself!
She says she is determined to bring back the psychedelic sixties. Maybe she’ll succeed where I failed: Nobody wanted to wear polo’s with popped collars last year!
While Ashleigh worked on her dress, Cyra and I planted some terrarium kits. Cyra had the “Strange Plant Collection” which features brain plants, eyeball plants, pitcher plants and a space plant. I stuck with something a little less strange: coffee and bananas.

I Made It Monday
A craft that helps me keep in touch with friends? Sign me up! I've been making plain cards pretty with my vast collection of stamps and inks. A quick and simple way to brighten up some one's day!
Do you see that smudge?? I hope the camera fairies bring me a new camera soon!
I think that I'll color in some of the stars to give it a little pop!
On some I decorated an envelope to match.
